Alexis Sanchez
Biography
Hailing from a poor Chilean family, Alexis Sanchez’s tenacity and determination have helped him become one of the highest-paid footballers in the world. World-class clubs are vying for him, and girls are giving their hearts to the youngster.
Childhood and youth
Alexis Sanchez was born December 19, 1988 in the small, poor Chilean port town of Tocopilla. In the family, besides the boy, there were three other children. His father was unable to support the family on a meagre salary of a fisherman and left his wife Martina to raise their children alone.
The family was poor. The future footballer’s mother had to take up any job to feed the kids. Having grown up, Alexis did his best to help Martina. The boy washed cars, did somersaults for money, and participated in street brawls on a dare. He had to survive in every way possible. As the brother of one of the highest-paid athletes recalled, sometimes there was no money at all, and children had to ask neighbours for food.

Sanchez’s uncle came to the rescue of a desperate woman and offered to take care of the boy. Martina was reluctant to do so.
Since childhood, Alexis’ biography has been linked to football. Agile, nimble, hardy boy, barefoot on the streets of the city. The first pair of boots was given to the young sportsman by the town’s mayor, who was impressed by his performance.
With no money for education not only from Sanchez’s mother, but also from his uncle, football was the only chance for Alexis. Until the age of 14 the boy played for the amateur club of his hometown Arauco, and then transferred to Cobreola. At the age of 16 the footballer made his debut in the main squad of the club. For his quickness and determination, as well as performance on the field journalists dubbed Sanchez wonderboy.
Club football
Serious football began for Sanches in 2006 with his move to Italian side Udinese. The club paid $3 million for the player’s transfer, which was considered a decent amount. However, immediately after the transfer Sanchez was loaned out to Chile’s Colo Colo and then to River Plate. Seasons at outside teams have benefited the player’s career, scoring statistics as well as winning matches have forced Udinese to keep Alexis in the main squad on the field.
Soon, the nimble, energetic and short player (Sanchez is 169 cm tall) attracted interest from world-class clubs. In 2008, there were rumours of player’s invitation to Manchester United. Then, the transfer did not take place.
In 2011, Sanchez signed for the legendary Barcelona, becoming the first Chilean to be included in the squad. It was the most expensive transfer ever made to a South American football club, with Barça paying €26m for Alexis and a further €11m promised as bonuses.
Nevetherless Ferran Torres is still a priority for Barça!
