Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is proud to have the World Cup in Qatar.
When lined up for a photo before their first match at the 2022 World Cup, the German players openly cover their mouths to express their displeasure at FIFA’s decision to ban the rainbow armbands “OneLove”.
However, Gundogan puts that history behind him and now, as a follower of Islam, enjoys the fact that Qatar is hosting matches at such an important tournament.
“My point of view is that the politics are over now. Qatar is very, very proud to be hosting the World Cup. It is the first Muslim country to host the World Cup. I come from a Muslim family myself and the Muslim community feels proud. Now we need to enjoy football and celebrate it,” — says Ilkay Gundogan.
