City knock Liverpool out of the League Cup and become the final quarter-finalist in the English Football League Cup with a 3-2 win over reigning winners Liverpool.
A homesick Erling Haaland reminds us of football in the 10th minute. The Cityzens‘ striker beat Joe Gomez and kicks the ball into the net after a cross from Kevin de Bruyne down the left flank to make it 1-0.
However, 10 minutes later the balance is restored. With the ball on the far edge of the penalty area, James Milner shots into the centre for Fabio Carvalho to take a low shot to make it 1-1.
City look slightly more favourable going forward, but delay their second goal until early in the second half when Riyad Mahrez takes a long pass on the edge of the penalty area, puts the ball under his comfortable foot and stricks it into the far corner of the goal to make it 2-1.
This time, however, Liverpool’s response follows even more quickly than in the first half. Darwin Nunez darts down the left flank, enters the penalty area and kindly passes to a free Mohamed Salah to make it 2-2.
The skirmish continues in the 58th minute when De Bruyne dribbles the ball towards the far post and Nathan Ake headers a rebound off the turf to make it 3-2.
That score remains until the final whistle, although Nunez misses a good opportunity to put the game to a penalty shoot-out.
